How to Paint a Wall Yourself?
Painting is part of the work in a house that we are not obliged to entrust to a professional. Indeed, by equipping yourself with the right tools and applying yourself a little, it is perfectly possible to paint a wall yourself.
If you have also decided to tackle this task, I will explain everything you need to know before painting your walls yourself.
WHAT MATERIAL DO YOU NEED TO PREPARE TO PAINT A WALL YOURSELF?
The first step is to choose your tools. These include the brush or brush , which you will need to choose depending on the type of paint you plan to apply. Acrylic paint, for example, is best applied with a brush with synthetic bristles, while epoxy paint should be applied with a brush with hog bristles. As for the roller, choose it with short hair for a glossy paint, and with medium-long hair for a matte or satin paint.
Also prepare gloves, a mask to protect yourself from solvent fumes, and protective glasses .
Finally, you will also need sponges, rags, sandpaper to sand and smooth the wall, and filler to fill in any holes.
WHAT TYPE OF PAINT TO USE?
The type of paint with which you will paint a wall will depend entirely on the rendering you want to obtain. You can find all kinds of paints in specialized stores: glossy paints, velvet, matte, satin … multi-media acrylic paints are ideal for painting indoors, for example. In this case, it is indeed better to choose products that release few volatile compounds and odors.
HOW TO PROTECT THE PART TO BE PAINTED?
Before you start painting the wall, you need to protect the room to prevent stains. I advise you to empty the room as much as possible, and if some furniture cannot be moved, cover it with a tarp . Since it is particularly difficult to clean paint stains from a floor, I recommend that you also protect it with plastic sheeting as well. Finally, to have clean edges, outline them with masking tape.
STEPS TO PAINT A WALL
Start by preparing the wall by sanding it with sandpaper, or by dusting it with a damp sponge. You can also apply a layer of coating of 1 cm which you will leave to rest beforehand for 6 hours. Then, sand the filler with the sandpaper.
Once the undercoat has been applied, you can start painting using your roller . To do this, paint in squares of 1m² first from top to bottom, then cross from left to right, and finally, for a perfect finish, smooth from top to bottom. Repeat until you have a strip 1 meter wide, taking care to respect the overlapping of the squares over a width of 10 cm, then finish by smoothing from top to bottom. Once the entire wall is covered, let it dry for 3 hours, then apply the 2nd coat in the same way. When you have finished the second layer, immediately remove the marking tape.
